KOL - Moving to Ravelry

Hi Everyone

We've made the decision to move this group over to Ravelry. At least for a trial run. If things don't work out, we'll be back. Can't see that happening, but anyhoooo...

So, for the foreseeable future, weekly posts will be in the group "KOL - Halifax Stitch and Bitch".

If you're a knitter and you aren't a member of Ravelry, well, you should be.

If we change the location and times of our group meetings, we'll come back here and post our new location.

For now, though, it's 7ishpm until closing at Cafe Ristretto on the Halifax Waterfront.

Well, most of them are ungrateful. My niece and nephews aren't ungrateful at all. Which is why I'm knitting mittens for them.

Mr. Happy is playing a show tonight as part of the Halifax Pop Explosion, so I will be imploding at home, wishing I could:

a. Go to the show without being exhausted the next day.
b. Be in three places at once. (Home, KOL, Show)

It's cold out. My kid has two pairs of mittens. That doesn seem like nearly enough. He also has only one winter hat, which he hates.

I happened to notice that the number on the last post for this blog was 300. So I did a little math and realized that the group known as KOL has been gathering since 2005. Then I checked back in the archives and found that our 3rd post on this blog was to inform everyone of a KOL night on Wednesday, September 28, 2005. Exactly 5 years from our gathering last week... or rather - your gathering last week; I was packing my bags for Newfoundland.

So, Happy Belated 5th Birthday, KOL! (The KOL of recorded history, that is!)

Friends have come and gone through the doors of whatever coffee shop we have called home. We and our friends have accomplished much more than just our accumulated stitches: we've watched baby bumps and then little babies grow; we've shared diapers, clothes, and stories; we've applauded academic achievements and crossed our fingers through unexpected career changes; we've mourned the loss of friends and family members; we've admired sparkly rings and wished the best for the brides; we've celebrated the new yarn stores and still mourn the loss of the old one; we've swapped yarn, but never partners (I think we all know too much about each other's spouses to ever consider it, unless there's something you guys aren't telling!); we've laughed ourselves silly over stories of visiting family and families we see every day; we've kicked each other in the butt when we needed it; we've celebrated birthdays and holidays and even our own special made-up holiday of World Wide Knit in Public Day (really, the best holiday of them all) and we've knit many kilometres of yarn. Many, MANY kilometres. In short, we've built our own little community in this big city.

Thanks ladies (and occasional gentlemen) who have shown up with your patterns, your sticks, your string and made what is, at least for me, a little welcome respite from the rest of the world, if only for a few hours, once a week, for the last 5 years.

Who will be coming tonight to kick off the next 5 years?

According to the gang on Information Morning today, the rain is coming but no one knows when, so you should tuck your umbrella under your arm when you leave the house today.

I wish that there was a similar report for knitters. "Looks like clear sailing at the grocery store today, but when you go to the bank, it looks like you'll have to stand in line for a bit, so tuck your knitting into your bag just in case someone ahead of you has a lot of business to do."

Not only are the Olympics and therefore the Knitting Olympics approaching their completion, but February, quite possibly the longest yet shortest month of the year, is approaching completion as well.

Can I get a W00t? Despite the obvious perks of February (my birthday, discount chocolate after Valentine's day), it always seems to be kind of grey and blah. If it weren't for all you lovely knitters, I might be inclined to pull the covers over my head and wait for April. Let's face it, March is no treat either!

All right, things have been getting exciting over on Ravelry. There was even talk of introducing a spinning night once a month. So, the powers that be have decided the second Tuesday of the month will be a KOL/SOL night. Bring your spindles, wheels and fiber, people. If you don't spin, beware - you may be converted by the end of the night. And I'll warn you now, my fiber stash is almost as big as my yarn stash these days. Scary.

Two points of note:

Any spinner who neglects to clean up after themselves...has to buy a round of cookies for everyone at the next KOL. You might want to pack lint brushes right along with your fiber, folks. And please, no pet hair (yes, people do actually spin dog and cat hair). That stuff can be allergy central. Myself, I'll be bringing my Louet Julia and some lovely merino/silk I've been working on. How about you?

New Home

Tonight we abandoned ship after arriving at Starbucks to find that there wasn't a seat in the place. If I didn't know better, I would say that all of the university libraries have shut down and students are no longer able to study on campus.

Ahem.

Anyhooooo the Ninja had already called a new spot to see if we would be welcome to knit there and the answer was yes - so we spread the word to everyone for whom we had phone numbers and headed to Cafe Ristretto in Bishop's Landing.

It's awesome. The coffee is great, the cookies are delicious, there were plenty of comfortable seats and we didn't freak out the barista.

My deepest apologies to anyone who arrived at Starbucks to find no knitters in sight. But the good news is, we've got a great new spot to knit.

2010 - Can We Find a New Home?

2010 - New year, new knitting goals, blah-dee-blah-blah.

Yes, mah frenz, it is that time of year, time to stir le shit, time to see if we can't find us another locale for the KOL knittahs. Let's face it, numbers have been dwindling since we moved to Starschmucks. After 4.5 years is it time to move on? Is it time to admit defeat? or is it time to circle the wagons and plan our next move?

As in the past we must consider that: While all of you are lovely, we don't want to invade anyone's home on Tuesday nights.

1. KOL is meant to be open to the public in a public space so as to allow anyone to stop in and give our group a trial run*. If we start house hopping, then we aren't likely to get newbies. And if we had done that when we unceremoniously left a certain coffee shop back in 2007, then we wouldn't have met some of the lovely knittahs we now call our friends. See what I mean?

2. The cats, people, the cats. Why do so many of you allow yourselves to be enslaved by the felines. Sigh. I know, it's all the cewt, but seriously, for some people (par example: moi) they are little fluffy balls of allergens.

So, tonight, starschmucks, but I think it's time to start exploring options again.

*We must face the fact that while we all think that we are awesome, we aren't the right group for everyone. Hence the number of knitters who have veni, vidi, vanish.

I am so relieved that Hurricane / Tropical Storm / Windy Man Bill blew past us with relatively low impact for a number of reasons, number one being that the tree that leans toward my house which HRM's Tree Surgeon swears will not fall on my house (HA!), didn't fall on my house. I'm not looking forward to the day when that tree gives up the ghost.

But mostly, I'm happy that Bill blew through here b/c it's so much cooler.

Yes, I've said it. I'm glad it's cooler out there.

I know that I should be ashamed of myself after all the icky, rainy, downright depressing weather we had this summer, but that heat wave was unbearable. I was just a puddle on the floor. My blood is too thick for weather like that.

So, Bill, I love you so, I always will. Won't you marry me, Bill?

Thanks Ninja for having my back last week with a post. We had a very busy, busy day last Tuesday and by the time I thought about posting, it was already 5pm. This week, I am getting ahead of myself and am posting 6 days early - Thank you scheduled posting on blogger!

If all goes as planned, I will be in New Brunswick this week and won't be joining you at KOL.

Have a great time tonight and hopefully, the Mogrunt and I will feel more adventurous and will join you when we return to the city.

Well gang, no baby yet... but I don't think I'll be dropping by KOL.

On the other hand, I received a note from a knitter who is coming to town for a conference. So, if a girl named Kirsti shows up, please pull up a chair for her.

World Wide Knit In Public Day

This Saturday, after sacrificing some wool to the sun gods, please gather your knitting, a few dollars, knitted items to donate, your sun block, your lawn chair or blanket and some snacks and head to:

Festivities start at 1pm on the lawn at the Spring Garden Library.

Please carefully read through the details about the events on the official HRM WWKIP Blog.

Last year's event was a lot of fun and this year's event promises to be even better!

Lulubelle and Cali have worked very hard on organizing this event, so please, don't forget to thank them profusely for what they have done for the good of knitter-kind! They've taken the initiative to gather prizes, organize contests and to make this event a fundraiser for Bryony House. And they've done all this without the expense accounts of British Parliamentarians. In fact, they are VOLUNTEERS.

All it takes now for the day to be a great success, is a flock (pardon the sheep pun) of knitters to gather and enjoy the festivities!

Yarn gods willing, I'll be either at the IWK with a new baby or at home with a new baby, so have enough fun for me too!

If, after attending this event, you have any complaints or concerns, please address them to the Volunteer Recruitment Committee for WWKIP 2010. Ahem.

Note: For those of you who might also attend the "World Naked Bike Ride", (which convenes at 2pm on the North Commons), please be sure to bring a "change" of clothes for the knitting event. Those arriving without clothing will be provided with acrylic merkins to ensure that WWKIP Day maintains its family event status. :)

Every week that I post, I wonder - will I be going to KOL tonight? I wonder if I'll make it there.

Of course, I don't wonder this because I am undecided about getting out of the house - I wonder this b/c I'm worried that I will be at the maternity hospital instead!

So, everything seems good for KOL for me tonight. No sign of imminent arrivals.

Is it just moi or is the sunshine making everything nicer?

It makes me want to frolic in my yarn stash and start all sorts of new projects! Wheeee! Mittens in May! Jumpers in June! Now seems like the proper time to start a winter hat for Mr. Happy, right?

It doesn't help that I'm home all day, staring at my yarn longingly from the couch (where I've been told to spend the majority of my time).

Can't wait to see y'all tonight. Same bat time, same bat place - unless someone has a better option that they've been holding out on.

Hi Everyone,

Not sure if you heard the news, but Lulubelle's (Rav) Knit-mobile met an untimely end this week.

KOL may be a bit more somber this week. :P

Anyone who has stories to share of the Knit-mobile, please feel free to gather at the usual bat-place and the usual bat-time. (7ish pm at the starschmucks on SGR & Queen).

Lulu - our thoughts are with you in this time of transition.

These are under the snow in my neighbour's yard.

They are resilient little flowers and we should take some guidance from them on days like today.

Spring will come.

The snow will melt.

And we will survive. Even though the snow made me want to weep this morning.

Why Is Everyone So Surprised?

Seriously, did you really think that just because the Vernal Equinox has passed that it is really "spring" here in Canada? This isn't Victoria, BC, fergoodnesssakes.

During my commute yesterday and today, I kept hearing people griping that Mother Nature had her seasons mixed up.

Um, no, Mr. Bad-Bleach-Job, she does not. You have just forgotten where you live.

Yes, it sucks that it snowed and yes, it's making us all a little grouchy. But did anyone really believe that Mother Nature would look at her wrist watch and say, "Ooooh, time to bring warmer weather to Canada"?

So, while it is hard to take more snow after this particularly white winter, just pull out your knitting and meet me at Starschmucks tonight. We can pretend our colourful knitted socks are crocuses / crocii? I dunno - I just know that the neighbour said she saw signs of life in her flower beds.

(And let me remind you - we almost always get one more snowfall at the end of April - sometimes even in May. There. Now you know. You can act all non-chalant when it happens.)
